Classical Ballet

Classical ballet is the corner-stone of Terry Simpson Studios' dance training

We teach the Royal Academy of Dance  syllabus for learning classwork and vocational examinations.

Junior School Ballet classes start with Recreation and Pre-Primary.

Primary and Grades One, Two, Three and Four - Students from Primary and upwards can participate in Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) examinations. 

Pre-Primary - This class is designed for 5-6 year olds and is an introduction for very young students to ballet and examinations

Primary - For ages 6-7 years. The Primary Grade is where the real training begins with students developing the strength, posture and turnout required for future Grades and character dances.

Grade One, Two, Three, Four -  Students in these grades are now building on their technique and vocabulary of dance steps. The continuation of National Character in these grades is very much enjoyed by the students and gives them the opportunity to study styles from various countries.

Primary, Grade One, Two, Three & Four students wishing to undertake examinations will be required to attend all specified exam classes per week.

There is a holiday workshop for students from Pre-Primary and upwards in preparation for the examinations and attendance at these workshops are mandatory.

Junior Ballet classes are held throughout the week and on Saturdays and are at held at our Mitcham Studios.

Middle (Grade 5, 6, 7, 8) and Senior School (Intermediate Foundation and above)

These ballet classes include Grade 5, 6, 7 and 8 and Intermediate Foundation, Intermediate, Advanced Foundation, Advanced 1 and Advanced 2. Pointe work now begins and creative development is nurtured. 

Middle and Senior students undertaking examinations will be required to complete all classes in their respective levels. 

These grades and vocational examinations are for students who wish to develop their strength, technique and artistry to the highest levels.

Classes are held throughout the week and on Saturdays at either Mitcham or our City Studios.

There is also a holiday workshop for students from Grade 5 and upwards in preparation for the examinations and attendance at these is mandatory.

Holiday schools are held at other times with renowned guest teachers and attendance and these are recommended.

Vocational Graded classes concluding with Solo Seal are designed for students wishing to fulfil a career in classical ballet.

Training is intensive and requires a high level of commitment.

Full Time Programme

Terry Simpson Studios’ Vocational Coaching Programme is designed for the serious student wishing to build a career in professional dance, choreography, dance teaching and allied dance fields.

The Programme runs 5 days a week involving around 30 studio hours, and aims to increase, improve, and refine technique, strength, knowledge and presentation.

Students have access to all studio classes, as well as Private Coaching, helping to build not only stronger technicians and dancers, but also well rounded and intelligent artists.

Our expert faculty offers daily training and coaching in classical ballet, contemporary dance, pas de deux, pointe work, choreography, male technique, production, artistic coaching, repertoire & body conditioning/pilates.

The Programme is as much about technique and discipline as it is about body conditioning and wellbeing.

Programmes are tailored to suit the individual needs and aspirations of each student and are arranged on either a Full-time or Part-Time basis.

Arrangements have been made with selected Secondary Schools for students to  complete their academic studies,  in conjunction with attending this Programme.

Private Tuition

Students can arrange private coaching with one of our expert staff 

Contemporary Dance

Contemporary Dance is an integral part of the well rounded and diverse Dance education provided by Terry Simpson Studios.

It provides great opportunities for students to widen their dance experience and training and to further their professional careers.

Terry Simpson Studios' students learn contemporary based technique and choreography from our expert teachers who have both danced and choreographed professionally in contemporary dance companies in Australia and overseas.

Jazz & Tap

Jazz and Tap Dance Classes are held in the Junior and Senior School, whereas Hip Hop classes are held in the Senior School under direction of our expert and professional staff.

Tap, Jazz and Hip-hop Students also have the opportunity to perform at the annual SACE Dance and EOY Junior and Senior performances

Some of our students attend Jazz, Tap and/or Hip-Hop Classes without attending other classes, such as Classical Ballet or Contemporary Dance 

Although many of our students choose to complement their formal classical ballet and contemporary dance training with Hip Hop Jazz and Tap classes to  provide versatility to their dance repertoire.


South Australian students are able to include SACE Dance as one of their SACE 1 and 2 subjects

SACE Dance from 2021 is being offered through Adelaide High School

Students attend classes on Saturday mornings at Adelaide High School

Students are expected to undertake 3 classes with Terry Simpson Studios to develop performance pieces for assessment.

Body Management

The Body Management Programme includes classes in Limber, Conditioning, Pilates and Yoga.
